So I just realized this is a thing. Looking at the ridiculous hotel prices and instead our family of five can just overnight in an above garage apartment or condo.

Hundreds of reviews for places like this, with families or anyone just passing through.

Who here has done the same?

I have gotten last minute Airbnb. Always stand alone units though. I don't want to stay in a house with strangers.

Yes, done this. Where are you starting and where you are going would be nice to know, that matters a lot.

Yeah there are several with shared spaces, such as pass through the kitchen to get to the stairs to the suite. Very odd… but even those reviews are solid.

Depends heavily on the associated fees on whether it’s cheaper than a hotel or not. A rental might be 90 for a night, then there’s 150+ in additional fees, which stay the same whether you rent for 1 night or 10 nights. As such, we usually only do AirBNB for more long term stays.

That being said, we also only stay in standalone units. Fees might be less when it’s a part of someone’s house and they handle cleaning and such themselves.

When you search for a stay, you have the ability to search and have total cost displayed in results, which is very helpful to see all fees and not get sucked in to an apparent bargain in nightly fee with a bunch of hidden costs.

This exactly what I was going to comment, typically with cleaning/misc fees, a hotel is going to be much cheaper for a single night than any AIRBNB other than maybe a shared space.

Cleaning fees will get you. AirBnb Cleaning fees are ridiculous and will be good for longer stays

As others have said fees kill you on 1 night stay.

So what do you want to do on an "overnight" stay? If just dinner, sleep, get up, hit the road hotels are better. Good Airbnb's are rarely close to interstates or major highways like hotels. Even if you find something nice you might have to drive 15 or 20 minutes out of the way to get there. Now if you are doing a whole day somewhere cool and central to a lot of airbnb that might sense. But I mean arriving around 3 pm and doing stuff in that City or area, then not leaving till afternoon the next day.
