hard cover carry on bags w/ wheels

My wife (no pics) got a CALPAK set for Christmas and I was thinking about at least getting my own bag that I can use for just a carry on for a future flight since I feel like I'm done with backpacks and duffel bags. The CALPAK was nice to roll around but seems a bit pricey.
Do yall have any recommendations on a hard cover carry on bag? Ideally under $200.

This thread ended up having a lot of great information.
I've preferred soft sided to hard because of the flexibility personally. I've used the eBag Motherlode on multiple European trips (I usually check in bag because the wife has a larger one she likes, but it would fit in an overhead). For the price, don't think you can beat it.
A little higher up would be the Travelpro Series.
Good Article On Carry Ons
My friend has a hard sided Delsey, so that'd probably be among the top brands.
Hardsided Luggage Reviews.
FWIW, I have a friend that works for one of the leading luggage makers and asked him this question. His comment was:
Wheels- Briggs & Riley is really good stuff. Spendy tho. Victorinox is a close second. For reasonable stuff, I’d look at Costco.
For shoulder carry Ospreys 55L Farpoint is the best. 40L in the overhead, 15L under the seat. There’s also a wheeled version of a 36 and a 15L pack.

I have an Amazon Basic that I bought for about $50. Works perfectly for me.
Only suggestion I would make is to make sure whatever you buy has 4 wheels that spin.

Places like TJ Maxx or Marshall’s sell luggage. I found a nice name brand 4-wheeled carry on for less than $200.

Whatever you do, stay away from Samsonite. Their quality has gone down big time in the past several years. My last two bags I got from them tore up within the first month. I fly 2-3 round trips a month for work, so I can be a little rough on my luggage. I would suggest something with rollerblade wheels that you can replace because the wheel bearings and zippers are the most common things to go out. I went with the RTIC rolling duffle(I know you said you didn’t want a duffle) because of the replaceable wheels and heavy duty zippers and it’s looking like the best bag I’ve ever gotten. I’ve had it for around 8 months now, and it rolls as good as the first day I got it.

We recently got a couple of Hanke hard side off Amazon, they are reasonably priced and roll extremely smoothly. I’ve used an Amazon basic previously and it did well especially considering its price.

If you're tearing your luggage within three - 4 uses thats a you problem, not a luggage problem.
That being said, I tried the four- wheel, hard shell carry-on and went back to a two rear wheeled soft sided.
For a carry-on it's so much more versatile, easier to get around and I like having exterior pockets in the bag for things like chargers, passport, wallet, etc. without needing to open the entire bag. I also prefer the bags that have a interior pocket in the lid for my laptop since I prefer to not travel with a personal item to keep the area by my feet clear.
I won a Delsey version in a silent auction but before I did I bought one off of Amazon and figured I would run it into the ground before using the Delsey. 6+ years later, it's still working great. One little tear on the fabric that doesn't go through the bag but it's still working great. I haven't used my hard sided carry-on since 2018.

I have a solid black Gucci carry on with four spinning wheels that I use all the time. It has treated me well.

we are still early in the summer travel season, and lots of new grads are being given luggage sets. Wait a month and big discounts should be everywhere. I found a good deal on a Travel Pro Crew Series at Nordstrom rack... one of a kind.

I use soft side small (carry-on size) duffels with two in line wheels. Many hard sided suitcases with 4 spinner wheels don’t fit carryon requirements, but larger airpcraft let it slide, unless they want to be AH. (The wheels are supposed to be counted on the inches measurement) Smaller aircraft they can’t fit in the tiny overhead bins, nor at your feet. Since I prefer to always have my bags with me, not checked, I make sure they comply with every airlines draconian rules.
The problem with regulations is that they change. What meets the standard today may not meet it tomorrow. I have donated bags simply because they don’t comply with current rules.
Also, I have picked up very expensive luggage at estate sales (and always hope they weren’t drug running, lol). Many estate sale companies overlook luggage as a high ticket item, I have bought Filsons and other pricey bags for very little.
Hard side with spinner wheels are ideal for protecting your packed items, and for easily rolling through airports and down aisles. If last minute they have to be gate checked, at least have electronics, batteries, valuables , meds, etc in one tote bag within the hard side, so you can easily retrieve it.

went back to a two rear wheeled soft sided.
Why 2 wheels instead of 4?
I have a check bad that has 2 stationary wheels in the back. I much prefer the maneuverability of my spinning 4 wheel carry-on.

Pulling is easier than pushing. I am not concerned with being agile as much as going over thresholds, going over carpet in hotels or resorts or going over rough streets / sidewalks especially in underdeveloped countries.

Here's an example...last year we went back to the Philippines and one island we went to was Boracay.
Gorgeous hotel, great views, elevator, etc.
Here's the problem...all of their hotels are on the beach but there is no road access. To access the hotels you need to wonder down these pathways (look under the sign that says "Amazing SHow" between buildings for about .25 mi THEN you need to walk along the sand just to get to the hotels entrance.
Being able to pull my bag with heavy duty rear wheels was easier for me with that kind of designed for that kind of build in mind.
