I turned 18 in 1971 and remember registering at the local draft board to get a student deferment to include in my college enrollment packet.

I listened to a good podcast on this topic about what Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara did to fill the numbers for the Vietnam War. If they ended deferments and forced college students to fight the war, this would have ended the war almost immediately.
