I think simply calling him a grifter is disingenuous. He is a visionary entrepreneur that has has had some great successes and some failures. As of late though his penchant for bullshite (and drug use) is starting to catch up with him. It would not surprise me to see the value of his companies continue to decline

And has received tens of billions in government funding to get there. In fairness, grifters are historically swindling smaller amounts, so there's probably a better word for someone who leaches whole GDPs from governments.
