I would add that I like to stay in competition with myself, to be better than I was the previous week, month, year is also one of the driving factors for me. I've got two young kids and being able to run around with them and not get tired, to be able to throw them in the air, to ride the bike with them, is so fulfilling.

Not having the kids wear you out is a big bonus. Like another poster above said, I am an older dad, and staying in shape means I can keep up with my young kids and live longer for them.

As to competition, hitting PR's is mentally and physically rewarding. As is understanding and breaking through plateaus. Instead of binge-watching TV shows and gorging on garbage, I'm busy trying to figure out how to make, and making, my next race faster or my next workout better.

And as to another poster: it is a great stress reliever from a stressful work life. If I go more than two days without a workout, my mood is not great.
