I have never played anything but the white tees 
Was always told you should do it by handicap just as much as distance
I have seen a decent amount of younger guys that hit it decently far playing the tips as a 12 handicap. Seems silly

Yup. We have a course up here that specifically has signs up on 1st tee:
black - Handicaps under 5
blue - handicaps 5-9
white - handicaps 10+
