Got your story a bit twisted. Apple “borrowed” the mouse from Xerox, along with the GUI system idea.
Gates basically swindled the guy that invented/owned DOS out of the software as he didn’t realize what he had. IBM would have licensed it from him, but they scared him off when they showed up with a team of lawyers. IBM then had to pay Gates a royalty on every machine that ran on DOS.
Contrary to what Al Gore claims, it was DARPA that created the internet.

I'm surprised that Gates wasn't the first one to be exposed as a fraud.
