I think it’s fairly distinct… the pain will be focused around the joint. Do you ever feel a popping sensation when you open your mouth wide or chew?
Not a doctor or dentist, but I did have a TMJ issue that lasted a year or so. Dentist said it was probably from grinding/clenching my teeth. I would feel my jaw pop and I would get this awful burning sensation that extended into my ear canal. It never really felt like a toothache or anything. Made an effort to avoid grinding my teeth and eventually it went away on its own.
