Never have understood the addiction to gambling. My brain automatically associates gambling with burning money. Then I think of the things I've withheld from myself that I could just go out and buy without guilt for the cost of gambling away money.

That said, slot players are some sad arse people. The last time I sat and actually watched people, there was a destitute looking dude gambling away his work check on a slot machine he didn't even seem to understand how to play.

The saddest thing I ever saw was in a local bar in St. Bernard Parish. They had an older guy who'd come in daily and have himself a couple cold beers, maybe drop a few dollars in the video poker machine and head home.

Well, the old guy dies and his wife started coming in, something she had never done before. Come to find out the old man had a little life insurance policy that left her $10K.

She would get one drink and go to the poker machines and drop a couple hundred dollars at a time in them. There were times she hit a decent hand and rack up some money, but she'd just keep playing until it was all gone. This went on for a couple months on an almost daily basis and she pissed all that money away.

Shame too because they were not well off people and I'm sure that $10K could have helped her instead of pissing it away like she did.
