What do you want chickens for?

Twice a year I buy Cornish Cross meat chickens. Feed them out for a few weeks then slaughter. No big deal.

Egg layers are not worth it to me. Between the crowing, snakes and daily work, I don't want that crap. And if you live in the country, you get about as many free effort as you'd like. A buddy of mine has layers and he gets 40 every single day. He can't sell them so he just gives them away to people he knows.

I've had hens all my life. I can count on one hand the snakes I've had get in the coop. Currently I've got around 20 and averaging 10-12 eggs a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the weather. At one time I had around 50 and it was just too much. Feed has went up alot in the last couple years. When I get a rooster, I give it away. No use for it. I've never sold a single egg. I just ask for the cartons back after they use them.
