I agree. The original point was that in the same way you don’t have to experience a free fall to know the value of a parachute, you don’t have to experience childlessness in old age to know how much that would suck.

No, your original point was that burdening your children with taking care of you when you can't do it yourself is somehow cause to have children in the first place.
Your parachute example was terrible because there's a very likely predetermined outcome if you jump out of an airplane and can't slow yourself down before hitting the ground.

You said that people who haven’t experienced childlessness in old age amuse you when they have opinions about childlessness in old age. I said you don’t have to jump out of a plane without a parachute to know the importance of a parachute.
In other words, you don’t have to experience tragedy in order to have an understanding of why it’s bad. And dying alone is tragedy.

I know what you said, and it changes nothing about my replies.
You keep trying to push this parachute thing. Your problem is that we're both done when we hit the ground.

DBs feigned indignation at your metaphor is a red herring anyway. Children are the parachute for every subsequent generation, whether someone chooses to contribute to that or not. The last generation of humanity is going to have a real bad time.
Either way, the concept of staying in the lane you're assigned based on your identity or "lived experience" is weak. It's an attempt to avoid debate on a topic for which you have a shaky position.

Why? Anyone could hire a couple of homeless people to watch. But, obviously successful people will hire Dave Matthews to play an acoustic show.

Nah. I've just seen enough of these stupid arguments about kids, religion, or whatever else people need in their lives to put almost no value in emotional arguments like that.
I mean..."you'll die alone and that's why you should have kids" is pretty damn pathetic and makes my point pretty fricking solid.

My kids will push me off on an ice shelf to be eaten by polar bears in a perfect scenario.

Did you construct this straw man from my posts or are you tackling someone else's points while responding to me?
"Continuing society/humanity benefits society/humanity" is a tough point to debate. You'll probably have to go anecdotal to even construct an attempt. Of course not everyone has to or even should have kids for society/humanity to survive, but as an overarching principle, people who choose not to have children have to be ok ignoring that simple, biological truth, and they have to be sure that society will carry the weight in order form them to afford the luxury.
I know as pretend Nihilist your concern is not with society, but I'm speaking to a broader audience.

That's the point the dude you replied to made during the discussion you decided to jump in to, sport.

Oh. You're speaking to me in response to my posts, but using an argument you're more comfortable refuting and declaring two victories. Nice.
There are plenty of true things you can easily dismiss, such as the pure joy of raising your offspring and seeing them thrive. Subjective points are not inherently wrong. I just know those are the ones that lead to a stalemate with you. Which is why I didn't bring those up.
Sorry for interrupting your party. You can respond to the right person now. That ancient civilization thread is a better Saturday afternoon option.

You've named me in more than one of your posts while trying to misrepresent my points. I challenged that.
It's not a big deal that you were corrected.

Nor are they inherently correct, which is why they so often end in a stalemate with me.

You’re involved in a lot of these stupid arguments.
Obviously there is far greater reward to raising progeny than having some shred of joy at the end of life. But I happen to believe that the greatest tragedy that can beset an intellectually honest person is to get to the end of one’s life and have nothing to show for it other than money wasted, cellphone videos from old concerts, and internet message board victories.

I don’t understand why so many people don’t want kids. You don’t need multiple but 1 or 2 is more than ok

Incorrect. I'm involved in some of these discussions where folks like you introduce stupid arguments.

...and children who will eventually die makes your life more meaningful?
You may be emotionally weak enough to believe that the only way to live a meaningful life is to produce more life. I am not.

So much irony in this thread.
For the population we need more children!
But people can't afford the children!
Have them anyway!
*Parents go on welfare to afford children*
People who can't afford children need to stop having children!

Honestly, I don’t mind people of the liberal persuasion not breeding. You want this nation to return to its founding principles? frick your way to it. Will take a few generations but eventually we’ll get there.
