That is what happens when you draft for need. Same with Davenport. Drafting for need at a late slot or with a weak position that year leads to disasters.

Let’s look at his bust of a career so far:
In three seasons he has appeared in 15 TOTAL games (5, 8, 2) for 3 sacks and 29 tackles (20 solo).
Two of his three sacks came against the pathetic Raiders team on 10/30/22. He hasn’t registered a sack since.

Nah. Drafting for need is fine as long as you pick the best player available at a position of need at the time you pick.
Drafting best player available regardless of position is stupid because the scouting is just too hit or miss and you can end up with a mediocre player at a position that’s already stocked, which adds absolutely no value. Getting an ok but not great player can help you at a position where you have absolutely nothing, but it’s useless at a position that’s strong already.
Drafting is basically a 50/50 game no matter how much information you have on the players. All 32 NFL front offices have shown that. I don’t think the Saints reached because they were drafting for need; it’s because Payton/Loomis/Ireland think they are smarter than everyone else out there and they get too cute and creative with the draft choices.
