its one thing to lose a NIL battle to a desperate team but its another thing to trot out an even worse line than we did last year. that cant happen
I mean- are we not desperate for DL?

True. But the bigger question a coach has to determine is is that one year (potential) fix worth resetting the market for your roster? If you have a big time starting LB with a $200k NIL deal see you sign a rotational, average DT at a "cost" of $600k guess who is going to be in your office soon, pissed off, demanding a "raise".
As a college football fan I don't like that reality. But that IS the reality. A college HC has to be both HC and GM now. That's why Kelly emphasizes wanting to build the roster through recruiting. It's easier, and in most cases, probably a bit more cost effective to "re-sign" your own guys vs. overpaying for average players out of desperation.
These signing don't happen in a vacuum. Newtown's laws apply. For ever action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
