Apparently the minor uses "they/them" pronouns. This adds another layer to the situation. What that layer is, I have no clue.

Maybe the writer was trying to hide the gender of the victim, but I have gotten to the point where I don't grant that "benefit of the doubt" to journalists anymore. So your view of this is probably close to correct, unfortunately.
