The podcast talks about that. With the lack of social media in the time and the fact that someone was killed for wanting to speak about the hoax, it is very plausible that only a handful of people knew about it and the fear of speaking out was discouraged due to the repercussions. It was also about creating national pride during a time of competitive national pride with the soviets.
