In my man cave, I boxed in one wall that gave my schnauzer about 15’ x 3’ and was able to put his crate at one end with an elevated stand of food/water. I put a 2’ square pee pad down at other end and he did great with that setup for the entire time I had him.

Crate trained, secured at night until 2 years old. Then leave the crate door open/unlocked, he now sleeps in there probably 50% of the time and almost exclusively during storms. The door is left swinging freely and unlocked, but he often pulls it open or closed at will. He's 5 now and so far hasn't destroyed anything.
