You could do Milan, Lake Como, and the Italian Alps in Bormio as a good trip too.

Just got back last night. Flew into Milan then spent a couple of days in Bellagio. Took the train from Milan to Florence. Day and a half there then drove all around Tuscany for 2 days. Took the train from Florence to Naples and stopped at Pompeii on the way to Amalfi. Two days there and a day trip to Capri. Flew home from Naples.
I had been to Rome and Venice before so left those off this time. Amazing trip all the way around
