New album only out a few weeks. Rick Rubin produced. Really good stuff. He is a badass if you get a chance to see him live.

Been meaning to listen to this, but reviews have not been inspiring me to. I've read that he's gotten away from being guitar forward to instead keeping it more rhythm based for the most part. That he has toned the music down for this record. You see it the same way? I do plan to check it out at some point regardless.

I definitely think it’s a different direction for him, but nothing crazy. More produced and perhaps a little more R&B, but I think it sounds fantastic and top to bottom doesn’t have any misses.
There was certainly more room for some additional jamming & soloing, but he didn’t go that route.
I just think it’s a solid great sounding record.

Thanks for the tip on the new album. Got to see him at the Grand Ole Opry a couple years ago, and he can throw it down.

Saw him at Hogs for the Cause in 2017 - he shredded on the second stage. Saw him again at the Fillmore in 2022 (Neal Francis opened). More polished but still raw, in a good way.
To Midget's point, I think he's got the range to do various styles and do them well - like Charley Crockett bouncing between pure country, blues and R&B. I've heard the new album a couple times and it's definitely more slowed down with low-key bluesy vocals, heavy on organ and piano and less guitar, but very listenable. Like Wildflowers and Wine, which came out 4 years ago, only more mellow. Good background music while working. Not so much for cranking up in the car like his other stuff but that's fine.
