I see your point, and I used to ask the same question.
However, when you look at most of these criminals, they have literally never known anything other than what you see them doing as it all ends for them.
They were born never knowing their father, running the streets unsupervised by the time they are 7-8 years old and idolizing the very people who will precede them in either a life of prison time or an early death.

It is truly sad when you think about the fact that most of them don't have any idea that life can be different than what they were born into.
