its twofold, the program tracks the balls movement so it can tell when forward progress is stopped and its also a time stamp issue so the refs say when the whistle is blown and where its marked at that time stamp is where its shown.

it takes every bit of doubt over whether they made the mark to gain or not.

nothing is perfect, but this is as close as you can get, and its the only way to do it when you cant see the ball inside a pile of bodies in a goal line scrum
