Louisiana lawmakers advanced a bill Wednesday that would protect teachers who refuse to use students’ preferred gender pronouns — even when students have their parents’ permission to identify as another gender.

The House Education Committee also voted in favor of a measure, dubbed “Don’t Say Gay” by critics, that prohibits discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity during class or extracurricular activities. Gov. Jeff Landry, who has claimed some educators promote “radical” ideas in the classroom, is widely expected to sign the bills if they reach his desk.
