There was nothing, nada, zip that gave us any indication at all that he was something more than a Walmart spree shooter.

There is still time for this to happen. They could easily slip in a line from a news story or something that says "Arthur Fleck, former honors student and chess master, fell deep into a mental illness at a young age and never came out of it before losing his mind completely as an adult and murdering...etc."
We don't know everything about him yet. A lot of his origin story is unknown.
