is he pulled out the knife at about 1:43 of the video

IF he has the knife at 1:43 (its unclear) he has it unfolded and in his right hand. At 1:42 is the first time contact is initiated and its from one of the girls. You can see him unfold the knife AFTER contact has been made.

Dude was clearly intoxicated and bold, probably irritated at the piss ant drunk American teenagers. But it was not until he was assaulted that he retaliated, it could also be argued for self defense because once they backed off, he did not press the attack.

This video is clear self defense. He thought one of them had the phone or that it was under water where they were, why would he leave? Then they started calling him names and heckling him. Again, emboldened and intoxicated, why would he walk away? Him being the older adult I could see him not wanting to get punked by these kids.

Could he have walked away? Yes
Could they have been more cooperative and left him alone? Yes
They were CLEARLY looking to bully and harass this foreigner.

Should he have walked away? Well, hindsight is 20/20 on that one. He has just as much right to be there and look for the phone as they do to harass him. The issue is when physical contact started and the herd mentality kicked in. He defended himself once they made it physical. That is clearly self defense. He's a foreigner being bullied and called names, ganged up on and then thrown to the ground and punched, the river adds yet another life threatening hazard. There is no telling what these irate drunken teenagers are going to do.

They fricked around and found out and its OBVIOUS.

Cameraman should be charged with significant crimes for inciting violence. If one person decided to actually help the man look for the phone or be cooperative in any way, this doesn't happen. The kids were assholes, period.

As for him lying, who wouldn't in that situation? An immigrant, drunken, with an ingrained distrust of government and Americans, self preservation was critical to him. Should he have lied? No, but I can see why he did.

Also, just in principal alone, the morons shouting "deadass" and "on God bro" I hope they stubbed a toe in the river.

I saw somewhere that he immigrated to the US when he was 14 or 15.
He's 54 now.

He's not really a foreigner anymore. although to anyone that doesn't know him and sees and hears him talk, they would assume he's a foreigner.
