In basketball there were a lot of things happening in the Big East at the time....and good hires by UConn. On the women's end they had Geno. On the men's end they hired Calhoun who had been successful everywhere he coached even as a high school coach. Calhoun also had the advantage of coaching exclusively in the NE area.... so he knew where the talent was. Also his ascent and UConn's probably had much to do with StJohn's disappearing as a national power as Lou Carnesecca got older and then retired by 1992. St John's had not been relevant since the mid 1980s and Calhoun had been trying to pilfer Long Island.
