I know someone who had it. Removed a foot of their colon. Was in the hospital a few days after for recovery. Was a pretty rough recovery but the good news is you're in the hospital for the first 3-5 days so they can manage the pain much better with more and better drugs since they can dictate how much you take. If you work manual labor you will not be able to work for a while but an office job you could probably be back in a few weeks.

Yup. I had 8 inches of my
Colon removed.. it ended up not working and had to get an ostomy… it sucks but I got used to it.

I had the surgery 3 years ago. They cut almost a foot out. It's not fun, but it's not the worst thing in the world. I was in the hospital for 3 days after the surgery and then was released. You'll probably lose some weight leading up to the surgey and after it with how sensitive your GI will be. Felt 100% within 2 months and was able to exercise again / put strain on my abdomen without feeling like it was going to explode.

You'll likely have to make a life style change with your diet, but it's not terrible. Good luck

My dad and a good friend have both had it.

Major surgery and recovery was painful and lengthy(3 months?). But 100% recovery when said and done.

doctor saying if this round of antibiotics dont work then surgery is the next step. Initial CT scan showed diverticulitis but last 2 did not. Still have pain and doctor believes its smoldering diverticulitis

Depends on what part of colon. Distal sigmoid and rectum are usually trickier as far as recovery goes

2-3 hr surgery, usually performed in minimally invasive fashion if elective. 2-3 night hospital say. Ambulating, regular diet by time of discharge. 6 week restriction on heavy lifting. Complication rate minimal in competent hands. Ostomy for elective procedure rare.

I had it in 2010 when I was 60,removed a foot of my colon.I had an epidural first 4 days so no pain to speak of,only when getting up from bed to walk.
My bowel, function was slow to return so I had NG tube in for 6 days, ice chips only.

My appetite was really screwed up for a couple of weeks, all I wanted to eat was potato soup, mashed potato’s and English peas. The smell of meat nauseated me,

After.a,couple of weeks I was able to get back on regular food,

No heavy lifting for six weeks.

Interesting thing is I had irritable bowel most of my adult life, alternating diarrhea and constipation and lots of gas. After I recovered I had no more of that. Can’t believe I had diverticulum’s for 40 years.

After all that I only lost 8 lbs,was hoping to lose at least 20.

Hey man, have the docs talked to you at all about diet? I was told I had diverticulitis, put on antibiotics, CTs, hospital stays, all of it. Turns out I had become lactose intolerant later in life and had a few other food sensitivities. My gut was so inflamed because of it all they just called it diverticulitis. I eventually figured it out with some advice from friends but the GI docs never once asked me about diet. Cut out dairy and some other foods and fixed 5 years of problems in 3 weeks. Consider looking into it if you haven’t before you get cut on.

Mine was a tiny fissure they had to go in and repair it so the time frame was about 6 weeks no heavy lifting. I was in and out the same day.
