Not sure this link will work, but it looks like high tide was at 12:04 a.m. so if he went into the water around 3 a.m. it wouldn've been on the outgoing tide, meaning he would've needed to go into the Cooper River and not the Ashley which is nearer his place because he would've missed the island.

Dude left his apartment to find some blow at 2am. I know that portion of the east side very well and it isn’t that nice after 2am depending on certain factors. Probably got accosted by someone. I’m sure they dumped his body in the Cooper. It washed up on Castle Pinkney later as the tide went out.

Case solved.
