Why is the military allowed to continue to operate at a loss each and every year?

Why is the fire department allowed to continue to operate at a loss each and every year?

Because they're not businesses, they're public services.

The DMV is a public service. Now I go to an insurance office near my home operating a side service. It takes me 5 minutes to get a new photo license.
The DMV took an hour. I'd pull number 56 and they would say 'Now serving No. 4.' There were 8 desk operator stations. But only 4 were open. The rest were taking their hourly lunch break. Govt workers suck.

Those don’t have private competition. They are not competing in the marketplace. The USPS is.

Big difference.

Because it's part of national security, possibly?
