I'm not against it. I know it's a weird comparison but I view it like I do teachers.

If we value having really wise people with good judgment in these areas of public life, we're going to have to greatly up the pay and squeeze out many of the people who are there now. Society will have to invest in it. And those leading the charge will have the unenviable task of convincing the public that a bureaucracy that can't accomplish...anything, can undertake this massive paradigm shift efficiently/wisely.

And you're still going to have major stigma issues and I think you've still got a problem of how to rightly gauge maturity/judgment. You need brave, sober minded and intelligent people. Half of them won't be interested off the bat. More won't be interested because of the lifestyle (bankers hours are more conducive to family, etc.). I'm just not sure there are enough people who fit the mold who can be compelled to take the jobs.

As of today approximately 0.2% of the US population are sworn police officers.

You don't think there is at least 800k people that fit your mold in our country of almost 350 million?
