My kid got his license a while back and has been playing racing and airplane sim games for years. It will almost certainly help him learn. First time my boy drove a manual took him a couple of tries feeling out the clutch, but was good to go almost right out the box. Same with countersteering and drifting. He could immediately do it just like in the game on the gravel roads on our land.
He started out with some Logitech stuff, but saved up and got the Fanatec wheel and hydraulic pedals (not sure what brand). I have to say, those pedals feel very realistic.
