You need to fix this to play decent golf. Have you taken a lesson? Ideally one with video and computer analysis? I worked lot with the Smart Ball and one of the things it did was to help straighten this out.

Not necessarily. I take a divot that run outside/in for 20 years now and last year was down to a 2.7 handicap and was a scratch for quite some time. If the muscle memory is there and you can make that same swing consistently, you can have an off plane swing. Mine is not bad, I don't know how bad off plane the OP's is, but mine is more than manageable, much less a swing that won't allow me to play decent golf.

That being said, I would definitely encourage him to get lessons as well though.
