My argument is that Trump did the same thing. His field of expertise is not medicine and listened to fauci and others. I know now that fauci is a full of dung leprechaun, but at the time I did not.

There was nothing safe about acquiescing and letting liberals take control of the whole show. I'll take a virus with a legit 1% mortality rate over giving Leftists the opportunity to burn down the country.
I don't think Trump took the safe way out. He took what he perceived to be the easy way out. He never had qualms about big government/big spending, so what's the big whoop about spending trillions needlessly on a virus that was ridiculously over-hyped for political effect? He just didn't want to be drug through the mud mere months before the election.
By the way, you didn't need to be a virologist or an MD to know (in near real time) that Covid was not the virus it was marketed to be.
