quote:A regulation game is 9 innings. If you can look at extras/OT for what it really is - a necessary tiebreaker since neither team got the job done in regulation - a quirk like this is easier to digest
“Hey let’s play 9 innings of baseball, then post up a runner at 2B to start every half inning after that.”
As alluded to above, nearly all form of regular season overtimes have quirks that make the OT period arcade-like
- CFB is essentially the same exact concept as MLB with ghost runners - teams start in scoring position without having to earn it like they do in regulation, with completely new strategy based on field position
- NFL has a shortened period with bizarre asymmetric sudden death rules
- NHL goes from 20 minutes of 5v5 to 5 minutes of 3v3, and a shootout follows that doesn't represent the nature of the game
- Soccer in non-league competitions has a short OT period and then penalty kicks that don't represent the nature of the game
- NBA is largely untouched just with a shortened period, but the overall product sucks arse and is largely unwatchable
It's maybe a silly rule to start immediately in the 10th as opposed to 11th or 12th...but in a 162-game regular season? I can't hate it. Again, it's a tiebreaker
As long as those quirks disappear in the postseason to ensure the game is won the way the sport is meant to be played, that's what matters. Almost all of the above (including the ghost runner) disappear in the playoffs

This is pretty sensible. I think it would be better too if they didn’t start it until at least the 11th.
Of course, I also realize that ultimately sport is entertainment and they want to pander to consumers. While I still have fond memories of watching Rick Camp hitting a home run at 2 AM or have always oddly been attracted to similar weird things, I realize that most people would rather see a DH hit instead of a pitcher :/
