While that is probably true, if you are going to spend over $2,000 on new clubs, you might as well spend a couple hundred more to get fitted for them.

You are probably right for most people. I know enough to be able to do a better job for myself given enough time (with irons at least. Driver fitting would be probably be better at a fitter given the larger shaft selection).
I would recommend if you want an entire bag fitting to split it up into 2 days.
