That is what is so frustrating about Speights. He looks the part, but was just terrible on the field.
Yep.

His flat out refusal to actually get dirty and tackle was evident, dude just likes to push people and stand there.
Yep.

His coaches failed him.
What?!

quote:Coaching failed him, I agree. Dude has the physical ability, and displayed it in a different system. He WANTS to make plays and perform. He could not integrate into House's system, at the position House was directly responsible for coaching up.quote:

I mentioned it back in another thread, the loss of the DL coach wrecked this defense. House (and other coaches) tried to take up the slack with the line, and as a result neglected their primary responsibilities. He probably stuck Speights out there as starter, because he had skill and experience on the field, but didn't spend enough time getting him up to speed in the schemes. Thus, he was lost out there, getting by with what he had... "YOU, go play linebacker. Do what you did last year. Now, I'm going to go work with Maason Smith and the line".
Let's not forget, House was also responsible for half the special teams too. Coverage, lanes and whatnot.
Look at what we brought in- MORE defensive coaches than before, more than we had going into last season.
And special teams are now under the new TE coach, not pieced out to the DC. The new coaching lineup shows redundancy and more time to work with defenders, which clearly needs to be a priority.
