In the 1984 period, Japan had some interesting rules for yearly tax on automobiles. The tax rate after 2 years would double every year. After 7-8 years it was cheaper to buy a new one rather than a good used. I bought a 7 year old Nissan for the year I was there and had to prove I had a legal parking place, and the annual tax was 95 % of purchase, and would go up to 130 % to who ever I sold it to. Needles to say selling was a problem, BUT, if I just abandoned it, I would be barred from re-entering Japan. So I had to bring money to the sale of something I completely owned
