100k+ tons moving at ~7.6 knots is a LOT of mass in motion. No manmade object is going to take that hot head-on without taking on lots of damage to itself.
The point of the post though is that this event is going to make people think about bridge infrastructure (at least until something else comes along to redirect media focus).
