I don’t understand why the ship didn’t drop anchor immediately? That’s a manual system and an emergency procedure that is practiced!

If they lost power, that could've affected it. On a boat that big, you're not stopping with just an anchor.

Anchors were dropped and a mayday call was made when they realized they couldn't control the ship. Boat was going 10 mph with almost half a mile before the bridge. They would've reached the bridge in 3 minutes at that speed, where any major corrections had to be made immediately. Anchor wasn't going to stop it in time, ever. If they don't have power to bow thrusters and the main engine, they were just going to drift into the bridge, which is what it looks like happened.
