Disclaimer: my tastes have always been more towards rock so my answer is skewed.
Mid 70's to mid 80's was really good for music, but by the late 80's it was getting stale and hadn't changed much. That is why many rock fans consider the 91-94 the best. Those years alone gave us more change in music then any other time, across almost all genres. As far as rock is concerned, more great new bands hit the scene than at any other 3 year period in time and song writing, while shallow throughout the back half of the 80's got just as good, if not better than what we had in the 70's. Today, there is some really good music, but you have to look deep into you streaming service to find it.
