Any drug possession charge other than simple possession of marijuana was a felony when I lived in LA. Even simple possession of marijuana was also a felony until pretty recently.

And it doesn't take much for possession to not be "simple." Have more than an ounce. Be too near a school (muh drug free zone). Maybe even having paraphernalia- I can't remember that one for sure.
