There's a solution for that which exists in 32 of 33 industrialized countries. For some reason, people like to be against the solution while simultaneously bitching about hospitals becoming a veritable family medicine office.
Just sayin'.....
Our local hospital's ER also gets backed up..very frustrating. They're great checking you in, getting your vitals quickly and grabbing a summary of why you're there, and then promptly telling you to take a seat for who knows how long. Problem definitely seems to be with staffing/beds behind the lobby door.

You can order test strips online.
Call the doctor and ask them to call in a prescription.
That’s what we did with my elderly mother after too many hospital visits during after hours.
