Rap music from the 80’s-early 2000’s was the golden years. It drove off the cliff about 20 years ago.

While I agree that was the golden age (the beginning so often is) the genre is more creative and diverse than ever (check out Schoolboy Q and MIKE's new albums). Some Rap/hip hop is kind of merging w/ alternative/indy. Listen to Amen Dunes and Matt Champion and you can hear elements of the genre. Artists like Migueland Frank Ocean are stretching the genre. Edited to add Mac Millerhas a new single out despite being dead for a while.
