Johnny was not what you would call, in a technical sense, a great singer. But delivery also plays a big part. He was a larger than life figure, a commanding presence.
Others that aren't 'great' singers, but were successful include:
Jimmy Buffett (although I didn't consider him 'bad')
Willie Nelson
Kris Kristofferson
