Night of the Green Sneks

Amazing night shining for rough greens…previous record was 11 - last night we found 22 rough green snakes! Walked the trail in the evening flipping boards and found 2 broad-banded water snakes, a little ribbon snake, and a juvenile cottonmouth. But we really hit the jackpot on the walk back, shining right after dusk.

As a kid in a river parish we caught green snakes and played with them almost every da6n8t seems. Cool little sneks!

We rarely saw them as kids - maybe got 1 or 2 each year. I only learned about shining for them at night in the last few years. When my youtuber friend first flew down here 4 years ago and wanted to look for them at night, I was like, “Why don’t we just go look for a needle in a haystack?” I didn’t realize they stick out like a sore thumb at night. Sometimes old dogs learn new tricks.

How common are the rough greens? I caught one a few years back along the river and that's the only one I've ever seen. They look cool as all hell.

They are pretty common, but harder to find doing the day since they blend in so well. At night they tend to just curl up and hang out in the trees and are easier to spot - they almost glow in the light or their yellow bellies stand out amongst the green if they are higher up. I tend to find them more along the water, and generally the places I find them, there are plenty of them.

This was on a WMA, so the harassment was legal.

As long as it's not a pine snake, they'll certainly hem you up for looking at one of those crossways
