Spot on!

Conventional, Chemical and Biological would allow the invading country to eventually occupy the land, which in Russia and China's case would be a welcome opportunity in order to feed their population.

However, thermonuclear war would not only render the entire continent uninhabitable, but would do so for generations upon generations upon generations and the wind-borne radiation/radioactive particles would spread pretty much worldwide.

And the invading country would also be annihilated as the victim would launch upon detection of any launches against them. Remember 'Mutually Assured Destruction'? MAD??
