I think Rogan just discussed this with someone on his podcast the other day; I saw a clip of it. There's basically a cabal at the top that controls everything, and if you aren't in lockstep with their beliefs you're blacklisted. So anyone who wants to have a shot in Hollywood has to completely adhere to the ideology.

It's only in recent years when entertainment is getting a lot more dispersed that it's finally being shaken up a bit. That run from 1980's - mid 2010's will be a very interesting period to look at retrospectively.
