A prerequisite to a good friend is having a major dramatic disagreement at some point in your relationship, in my experience. I am lucky to have about 5 people I'd call close friends, going back decades, and we have all had significant grievances with each other at some point, but all still remain. I have yet to cut any of them off, and they have yet to cut me off.

That's pretty damn fair. Trauma bonds people, for sure

Women want to hang on to associates for life. Men seem to tend to figure out when friends age out, and people aren't just going the same direction. Men just stop texting. But if one of them comes to help you "bury bodies," you know you're going back to do the same for him years later. People have done that for me, get speedy service (as in contacts, underwear, and an OOO message). ETA: not actually burying a body, but I'll be on the road to deal with whatever is happening fast. My dude did it within 60m when I needed him.
