A lot of domestic refineries have retrofitted to handle the lighter crude from the GOM and TX shale patch.
Very few have. A number of smaller refineries have instead been not only shutdown but torn down instead. They could handle light sweet crude but not condensate as feedstock. What has happened is that refineries are blending heavy with light for a crude oil cocktail, thus require Mexican and Canadian for at least blending purposes. We are no longer shipping Eagle Ford "crude" from Corpus Christi via ship to LOOP so it can be pumped up Capline and on to Canada to blend with produced very heavy crude to make it suitable to be pumped in pipelines without steam heating. Capline has since been reversed do crude oil being shipped out of the Gulf Coast is no longer possible via pipeline. Thats 1.2 million barrels per day of crude oil that can no longer be imported by ship.
Major refineries in the Midwest have reconfigured to process MORE heavy crude from Canada.
I am unaware of much 56-60 API gravity crude from the GOM.
