We always did it in the heat of summer. Nick a ring around the bark on a branch, soak a wad of spaghnum moss in some Rootone (rooting hormone) water. Leave it dripping and wrap around the bare spot on the branch, cover securely with plastic using twist ties. Once you see roots, cut off the branch and plant it.
