There's not enough dissolved oxygen in a cup of water to stave off anaerobic bacteria for more than a few days. Tapwater chlorine would have dissapated by then as well. I get it may work, but there's also greater likelihood of things going tits up as well. Short story long, change your water at least twice a week, or toss in an aquarium pump.

Water gets changed every 2-3 days.
Also do the same for Ficus, Mandevilla and Hawaii Ti plants, when they get too tall
