A lot of important details are left out in this article.
Did they ask for a refund? Was it offered? What were the terms and conditions they agreed to when they bought their fares?
I doubt sincerely the cruise line rebooked the room, refused them a refund, dumped her mother’s shite, and didn’t communicate any of this to them.
